It is an exciting time for us at Spectrum Health Grand Rapids as we achieve re-designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program®. The accomplishment of Magnet® status is not easily attained.
Of the 13 Magnet Recognized hospitals in Michigan, three are Spectrum Health entities – Blodgett Hospital, Butterworth Hospital and Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. Magnet recognizes healthcare organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing services. It is the highest national honor for nursing excellence, serving as the gold standard for nursing practice.
As we celebrate we also acknowledge the achievement of Magnet Recognition® is not limited to a few months of preparation or a mere moment in time. ANCC Magnet Recognition® is a culture of nursing excellence that is experienced by patients, family and staff every day of the year. It is a culture in which high quality, evidenced based nursing practice is designed and delivered in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. It is a culture which ascribes to the ongoing evaluation of outcomes and asking of the question “what difference did it make?” It is holding the constant eye on how we can improve processes and maintain efficiency. It is the enduring actualization of the Nursing Professional Practice Model, the boundless compassion and the unwavering determination that Spectrum Health nurses embody to improve, maintain and recover health.
In reflecting on the previous year, we share stories which highlight the interdisciplinary partnership in identifying opportunities for improvement in both practice and efficiency, developing evidence based interventions and measuring the impact of these interventions.
Rejoice in our well-deserved re-designation of Magnet Recognition®. Continue the enthusiasm and celebrate the gold standard of nursing practice which you provide – but also maintain the constant vigilance – embrace the culture of excellence which we have created.
